Prince Charming vs The Frog

Watercolour background, rubber stamp (I’m pretty sure it’s a Kraftin’ Kimmie design), clear stamps “Pom” by Basic Grey have been heat embossed, rub-on letters make the wording.

The background print was created when I placed the stencil I had just sprayed ink over onto the page. I ended up liking this more than the stenciled design I made. Book pages, because I am obsessed with that look at the moment and then more spray ink through a large alphabet stencil (home made black ink using D&R Acrylic Ink + water). The flowers are a TCW stencil of large flowers that I traced on with regular felt tip pens, then painted over with watercolours. I didn’t have anything I wanted to express on this page, I just like looking at it.

With Love as Key

With Love as Key

If you are not confident with painting or drawing faces, rip one out of a magazine, glue it down with gel medium, give it a coat of transparent gesso and paint over the top. Keep the acrylic paint loose while you block in the features and shading, then just keep layering and refining. This is my way to become more familiar with a different style of portrait than I normally draw. I used:
Inktense pencils, Kaisercraft Stencil, assorted brands of paper flowers (mostly Kaisercraft), Matisse Medium 30, magazine image, Matisse transparent gesso, acrylic paints, book page, metal key, paper napkin

Watercolour Girl

I used watercolour for everything except the hair, I used gesso for that to give texture, and of course the stamping.
Something interesting I found: I used Micador spray fixative over the piece, the cheap set of watercolour I used dries a bit powdery and the colour can transfer; and the fixative reactivated the StazOn ink I used to stamp with. You can see the haze of blue on her hair on the left – that is due to the ink flowing with the fixative. Good to know for the future, spray fixative prior to using StazOn.

I had such fun making this page.

Making the video and writing the instructions took a lot longer than I expected, but I am putting that down to the learning curve. I had to do a lot of things I had never done before like create a video from still photos, work out how to add music, upload it to YouTube, embed a PDF for download in a blog post…. Next time should be a doddle *fingers crossed*.

Coloured pencil portrait

Coloured pencil portraitOne of my all time favourite journal pages. This is the mainly coloured pencils. I drew the face in graphite then gesso’d over the top with Reeves brand gesso, which is very liquid and has a fine grain. The prepared page has a distinctive tooth, almost like very fine sandpaper. This tooth grabbed the coloured pencil beautifully and I found it easy to achieve the gradients by building many light layers. I used a blending stump to move the colour around. In real life the face has a more translucent quality than in the picture.
